Yoga Open Heart
I often talk about opening the heart in yoga but what does this mean?
Physically opening the heart postures expand and strengthen the ribs, chest, sternum, upper back and shoulders. They improve posture and alignment of the spine. When practiced with pranayama they improve the flow of oxygen into our bodies thus improving energy and our overall health..
Mentally opening the heart makes you feel good, stronger, more powerful and connected to your inner self. When you stand up straight and breath well and allow your chest to expand instead of slump ,you immediately feel different more confident about yourself. There are many postures or asana that can help open the chest and open the heart to self love. These postures effect the body and mind and can be strengthened further by bringing in more yoga philosophy. The postures are only a small part of practicing yoga and can be made more powerful by bringing into class other healing elements. Beautiful music can have a wonderful effect on how you feel. The musical note F opens the heart chakra as well as certain musical instruments and music. We listen to Bhakti or yoga music and chants at the beginning of class. To lift the spirit “I love the smell of “ essential oils such as lemon grass and jasmine.. Colour therapy is also an important part of yoga for the heart area it would be green or gold. Wearing green or a green gem stone can help bring love and gratitude into your life. The healing golden light meditation is part of one of my new classes and there is another wonderful meditation to teach you to forgive and let go.. Mudras or hand postures such s Anjali mudra - placing hands in prayer position open the heart.. Marma or special massage points are also used in yoga. If you want to learn, explore and experience yoga at its most powerful my mind yoga classes begin in October.
Colour Therapy - Food Therapy
Brighten up your winter, eat the colours of the rainbow. Colourful foods are rich in antioxidants or flavonoids that are anti - aging and help protect us from disease.
Red such as berries and beetroot are good for the cardiovascular system, the heart and the blood. Hawthorn Berry is the most effective herb for the heart (and down dog is a wonderful asana to strengthen the heart muscle)
Orange colour mainly carotenoids are found in pumpkin, sweet potatoes, carrots and are especially good for chronic diseases.
Yellow colours are powerful anti inflammatory agents and good for the liver and gallbladder. Curcumin found in turmeric is becoming popular for its health benefits.
Green colours found in food such s kale are full of chlorophyll and help detoxify or cleanse the body.
Colours effect our mind
“We see red” Anger, danger but positively red can bring confidence and power.
Orange is warming and stimulating good for depression.
Blue is calming and cooling.
Green is calming and nurturing. Try to avoid black in winter and brighten up your day.
Warm Wishes Julie
